Chapter Six: Summertime

The bus stop had been moved. Sean smiled. Guess even Marquette had to change at some point. Still, he was glad he'd chosen to fly into Detroit rather than all the way to Marquette.

Doing the last leg of the trip on the bus gave him extra time to wrap his head around the change his life was about to take. The man across the aisle muttered in his sleep, and the woman sitting next to Sean smiled in his direction before turning back to Sean.

"Do you think we ought to wake him up so he has time to get the cobwebs out of his brain before he has to gather his stuff up?"

Sean gave the question a moment's consideration.

"Yeah, I know I'd want someone to wake me up."

As she leaned across the aisle, Sean's phone vibrated against his thigh again, and then the distinctive musical stylings of Carbon Leaf 's second album rang out. Huh. What would Blakely be calling him for at this hour? Sean wiggled around to pull his phone from his pocket. Managing to catch the call before it automatically went to voicemail, he depressed the call answer button while pulling the antenna up.

"Hey little man. What's shaking?"

Blakely paused for a second, and Sean could practically hear him rolling his eyes before he responded in an urgent whisper.

"Sean, I swear to God you are the second biggest dork I know. Jay-zus, you two are freaking made for each other. No, don't respond to that. Here's the thing. We gotta move the schedule up. Cal's having a major melt-down, and you need to get here pronto."

Sean's gut gave the same slow roll he felt on turbulent plane rides.

"What's wrong?"

Blakely huffed into the phone.

"Nothing if you can get here in the next couple of hours."

Sean nodded before he remembered Blakely couldn't see him.

"Yeah, yeah, I just pulled into the bus terminal here in Marquette. Can you get away to come pick me up, or should I put on my shorts and sneakers and run over?"

Blakely gave one of his thinking things through grunts. Sean pulled the phone away from his ear to check whether he'd lost the call. Blakely's voice came back before he could look.

"You'd better plan on running. If I try to come get you, he's gonna know I'm up to something, and this will work best if he doesn't have time to figure out how to respond. I mean, I know he knows you're coming, but later, right? So if you just show up here in like an hour or an hour and a half when he's not expecting to see you for five more hours, well... you'll have an easier time getting him to listen. And for fuck's sake, tell him about the house. He's about to start packing all our shit up, and I don't need that kinda hassle, Sean, I really don't."

Sean laughed helplessly.

"Simmer down, little man. Give me between thirty and forty-five minutes to get there, okay? I gotta stash my stuff in a locker here so I can run.
